Why Democrats defend the president
Linda Bowles, September 22, 1998

Americans are reading the X-rated details of alleged impeachable offenses committed by President Bill Clinton, and they are watching the tape of his grand jury testimony.  For the first time, they are getting an unstaged and uncensored look at the man who is their president.
The Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee did not want this information revealed to the public.  They are outraged.  In between tantrums, they accuse Republicans on the committee of gross unfairness and partisanship.
THIS EXHIBITION OF Democratic caterwauling, acrimony and demagoguery is no surprise.  It is what they have been doing for years at every attempt of the Congress to ferret out the facts about the corruption of the Clinton administration.
They are good at what they do.  If you were going to put together a small hit-squad of obnoxious loudmouths to burst into a serious meeting and throw it into total chaos, or if you were going to hand-pick some cold-blooded rogues to loot Fort Knox, you could not recruit a better gang than the key Democratic members of the Judiciary Committee:  Barney Frank, Maxine Waters and John Conyers.
What we have in view is a last-ditch, desperate attempt to hold back an avalanche of reality.  What these left-wing zealots do not seem to realize is that the barricades have been breached.  The center is not holding.  In a couple of words, the jig is up!  It's over!
At last count, more than 125 newspapers across the nation have called for Clinton to resign.  The list includes such prestigious papers as the Daily Oklahoman, the Philadelphia Enquirer, the Chicago Tribune, the San Jose Mercury News, the Atlanta Constitution, USA Today, the Grand Rapids Press, the Manchester union-Leader, the Washington Times and the Chico Enterprise Record.
You have to wonder why some Democrats are still risking their individual reputations as well as the future of their party by continuing to support Bill Clinton.  His presidency has been a bonanza for Republicans.  Since Clinton was elected, the GOP has gained 51 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, 11 seats in the U.S. Senate, 14 governorships, more than 500 state legislative seats and 374 elected Democrats have switched parties.
To make any sense of seemingly senseless Democratic loyalty requires that we once again go back to fundamentals by taking another look at a revised and updated view of the “raison d’etre” of the Democratic Party.
THE BASE OF THIS PARTY consists of a number of special interests groups, including the-sky-is-falling environmentalists, abortion industry workers, bilingualists, illegal immigrants, ideologically homeless ex-communists, communists, convicted felons, unconvicted felons, pornographers posing as artists, propagandists posing as journalists, network anchors posing, food stamp junkies, anti-American multiculturalists, hard-core feminists, abused and abusable women, the venereally diseased, anti-tobacco fascists, anti-religious bigots, latent anti-religious clerics, pro-gay clergy, gay clergy, government employees, union bosses, government contractors, the sexually disoriented, educrats, trial lawyers, the willing poor, drug addicts, old-sin New Age atheists, race hustlers, members of the black caucus, professional victims, punk musicians, condom manufacturers, proud and practicing members of the North American Man Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) and dead people buried near Chicago.
It is the job of the Democratic political hegemony to take the whines, demands, and ultimatums of these groups and translate them into legislation.  The ability to service these groups with benefits, preferential treatment, lifestyle validation, ideological succor, and hard cash stolen from other Americans is the glue holding the Democratic Party together.
At first blush, it would seem that this is simply a motley collection of American oddballs, social deformers, halfway house socialists, sycophants and assorted irregulars with nothing in common other than an allegiance to a government seen as the source from which all blessings flow.
Not so.  A good many of these Democrats share an important value.  They share the fervent belief that it is wrong to judge others, unless those others happen to be unacceptably heterosexual, white and conservative with a mean-spirited impulse to exercise moral discernment.
This value system provides a philosophic foundation for some Democrats not only to support a president who is an unrepentant degenerate, but to admire him for being one.  As a wag once observed, they have become so open-minded that their brains have fallen out.
MISLEADING BY EXAMPLE, Clinton has redefined the core of his party in his own image.  It is up to the rest of us to make sure that he does not redefine America down to the same level.
