After
watching the Moody Blues live at the Greek Theater in 2005, I have to
move them
up to the top. This band is still as good as they were when they
were in their early years of performing. They are a fine group of
gentlemen and the additions they have added to their band are
outstanding talents. Their songs sound as
good to me now as they did when I was younger. After being at the
top of my pyramid since its inception, Gary Numan has fallen from the
number one spot for two basic reasons. Numan abandoned his early
sound that I liked so much and he has failed to market himself in the
United States with such simple actions as selling his live concert
shows on VHS or DVD format. I love the music from his Beggars
Banquet and Numa years, but he has "progressively" moved away from this
earlier style. Gary Numan will always remain at the top as one of
my favorite musical artists. He is a great showman and a very talented singer/song writer.
Also, I had to move John Kay & Steppenwolf into my pyramid as I've
been listening
to them a lot lately. They went all the way up to the 5th tier
(it's never too late to start all over again). Other than
Steppenwolf, the Lettermen and Elvis, my top 10 have remained the same
for
several years now. Depeche Mode joined the top 10 and returned to
the Music Pyramid.Only the positions in the top 10 have
changed. I also added the Newsboys (contemporary Christian) and
Michael Buble (pronounced "Boo-blay") (singing the old standards)
singing and performing somewhat like Bobby Darin / Frank Sinatra, but
with his own individual style. In September of 2008, Nick Cave
& the Bad Seeds entered my pyramid after listening to them for 3
weeks solid. How did I discover Nick Cave? While
watching an old episode of "The X-Files" where Duane Berry was on
his "road trip" playing on his car radio the song "Red Right Hand" by
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. A month or so before I had
re-watched all three "Scream" movies and suddently realized weeks later
that there was a tune going through my head and I couldn't remember
where I had heard it. Well I finally figured it out. It was
by Nick Cave and his band. So upon listening to their "Best Of"
album, I realized that I enjoyed the music of this musical band and I
have cautiously placed them in the top 10 for now. They may
eventually rise higher, but they would have to dethrone some band or
artist that took years to earn the high spots in my pyramid.
Leonard Cohen was a major influence on Nick Cave, so I've entered him
into the pyramid. Right now, I'm listening to a lot of Leonard
Cohen.
This dynamic Musical Artists Pyramid changes all the time, depending on my up-to-date preferences. Artists that have been in my pyramid, since I created it, and bumped out are:
|
(in a Past Music Pyramid) ABBA, Louis Armstrong, Beatles, Blondie, Carpenters, Cars, Ray Charles, Chicago, Patsy Cline, Nat King Cole, John Coltrane, Crowded House, Miles Davis, Depeche Mode, Dire Straits, Eurythmics, Hall & Oates, Heart, Buddy Holly, Howlin' Wolf, Brian Hyland, Elmore James, Waylon Jennings, Journey, Mike + the Mechanics, Charles Mingus, Monkees, Newsboys, Roy Orbison, Charlie "Bird" Parker, Gene Pitney, Jim Reeves, Santana, Frank Sinatra, Spinal Tap, Steely Dan, George Strait, Stylistics, Styx, and Don Williams. |
| Personally, I rate the early period (1978-1983/Beggars Banquet
label) as the most creative and best artistically; followed by
the middle period (1984-1993/Numa label & IRS label) as strong
enough without the early works to make
Gary my favorite musical artist at the present time. His later period
(1994
to date) has a few attractive songs for me (especially on his
"Sacrifice"
album), but his dark overtones and dark depressing lyrics on his later
albums
do not appeal to me; therefore I cannot put my endorsement on these
later
works. All I am saying here is "don't judge my musical tastes by Gary
Numan's
music from 1994 to date." The last three albums ("Sacrifice", "Exile" & "Pure") have more of the darker textures of human dispair displayed in the alternative metal/industrial music of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson. Along with some other Numan listeners, I hope Gary comes out of this dark period and applies his artistic abilities to lighter themes in the future. |
I would highly recommend his "Premier Hits" CD
(Beggars Banquet #07618-20072) with 17 songs from his early days,
including an additional mix of "Cars".
The song "Cars" has been covered recently by the group
Fear Factory and revived interest in Gary Numan among some nu fans.
"Premier Hits" album tracks listing: (1) CARS (Premier mix) (2) I DIE: YOU DIE (3) ARE 'FRIENDS' ELECTRIC? (4) DOWN IN THE PARK (5) WE ARE GLASS (6) BOMBERS (7) WE TAKE MYSTERY (TO BED) (8) SHE'S GOT CLAWS (9) COMPLEX (10) MUSIC FOR CHAMELEONS (11) THAT'S TOO BAD (12) THIS WRECKAGE (13) WARRIORS (14) LOVE NEEDS NO DISGUISE (15) WHITE BOYS AND HEROES (16) SISTER SURPRISE (17) STORMTROOPER IN DRAG (18) CARS (Original version)
Gary's latest compilation CD is "NEW DREAMS FOR OLD 84 : 98". Below is the listing of the songs on this album. This is also a good Greatest Hits album of his middle and later songs, along with a '98 version of "Down In The Park" and a live version of "Cars". Together with Premier Hits, these two albums make a good 1-2 presentation of Numan's music.

I was introduced to Numan's music by a friend named Troy L. Walters. Troy has a refined understanding of music himself, producing his own colorful and soul piercing compositions on his computer and available on CD.

I also appreciate many works of the great classical music composers. I listen to some opera once in a while, with an affinity for the operas of Puccini, especially "Tosca".
